Mayfair's set lunch opens Michelin-starred dining rooms

In Mayfair, a set lunch is the way into Michelin-starred dining rooms at a fixed price. At Murano that means two or three courses for £55 to £60. At Gymkhana, which holds two stars, it is three or four courses for £75 to £85.

The pleasure here is ceremony and history. Veeraswamy has served Indian cooking above Regent Street for a century, and at its centenary dinner the waiting staff wore uniforms copied from the 1926 originals.

Indian cooking runs right through Mayfair's set lunches, and each kitchen tells it its own way. Jamavar looks to India's royal palaces, and the Michelin Guide says Benares "marries tradition with daring modernity." Check the days: Veeraswamy's set lunch is on Saturday and Sunday, and Michael Caines London serves its own Monday to Friday.

Soho's set lunch happens at the counter

Soho's set lunches put the cooking in front of you. At The Palomar, which has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand since 2014, the counter faces the open kitchen. At Chotto Matte it is the robata grill and a 3D neon wall that The Nudge says has the venue "feeling fresh, looking young again."

Both are weekday lunches. Chotto Matte's Express Lunch runs until 5pm. For an evening start, see pre-theatre set menus in London.

So pick the area by the lunch you want: a starred dining room with a past in Mayfair, or a counter seat and the heat of the grill in Soho. For more, browse every set menu guide or set lunches in Mayfair.
