The prix fixe at Provender follows the market, so the dishes change with what comes in and the day's menu goes up on the restaurant's Instagram stories. It runs two or three courses £19.50 to £25.50, Mon to Sat, 12pm to 4pm, long enough for a lunch that starts late. The bistro on Wanstead High Street has held its Bib Gourmand every year since it opened in 2012.

Manteca butchers whole animals, rolls its own pasta and keeps its own salumeria, and the set lunch is a rotating Rapid Rigatoni: two or three courses £24 to £28, Mon to Fri. The Infatuation counts business lunches among its uses, and the Curtain Road site has booths and counter seats as well as tables.

Antique mirrors, marble table tops and original wooden panelling line the dining room at Trishna, and the terrace doors open onto Blandford Street. The kitchen cooks from India's coast. The Taste of Trishna lunch is one to four courses £25 to £50, Wed to Fri, 12pm to 2.15pm, with dishes such as hariyali bream.

London's oldest surviving Indian restaurant opened on Regent Street in 1926, and Veeraswamy is now in its 100th year. Its menus draw on the palace kitchens of Hyderabad, Mughal India and Patiala, served on a mezzanine above Regent Street. The Centenary Menu is four courses £60, Mon to Sun.

A fixed price takes the menu off the agenda

A business lunch is about the conversation, and a set menu settles two things before anyone sits down: what to order and what it will cost. The table reads one short card, orders quickly and gets back to the point.

Timing matters as much as the food. Luca serves its set lunch from 12pm to 2pm, and The Goring's Dining Room serves until 2.30pm on weekdays. At Amaya, the lunch platters are a single course, for a table due back at a desk.

Choosing the neighbourhood for a client lunch

Near the City, Manteca sits on Curtain Road in Shoreditch and Luca on St John Street in Clerkenwell. Both make their own pasta; Manteca is built on whole-animal butchery, and Luca's dining room is art deco-inspired.

In Mayfair, Veeraswamy, Benares and Jamavar each take a different route through Indian cooking: a century of palace recipes on Regent Street, British produce with Indian spice, and a menu that runs from north to south. Trishna, in Marylebone, cooks from the coast.
