About Oorja

Oorja, the Hindi word for energy, cooks North Indian food on Shaftesbury Avenue, with the Palace Theatre a few doors along. The kitchen takes its lead from the street stalls of Janpath and Chandni Chowk and the dhabas around Amritsar's Golden Temple.

The tiffin lunch is three courses for £21: chilli chicken, a samosa or aloo tikki chaat, then a grill such as dill and cumin salmon tikka or mustard prawns, then butter chicken, paneer makhani, a Goan prawn and green mango curry or a black cardamom lamb curry, with basmati rice and salad.

The pre-theatre menu runs every day from 4pm to 6pm at £25 for a starter and main, served with smoked dal, rice and breads for the table. Soft shell crab with raw mango pickle, crispy spinach chaat and Patiala tawa sea bass are on it, and a trio of kulfi or a chocolate caramel délice adds a third course for £8.

Tables of six or more can book the feast at £49 a head, in vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions, and from 15 November to Christmas Eve a festive feast with tandoori turkey roulade, at £42 for lunch and £55 for dinner.
